Zach Settewongse – JOBY Community and Content Manager aka Social Butterfly with a Camera and outgoing Personality

HELLO – I thought I would take a quick minute and introduce myself to the JOBY community of awesome peeps.

BACKGROUND

I call myself a professional Photographer/ Cinematographer/ Adventure and so far people agree 😉 I have been working with a camera in my hands full time for five years and love it. If there is one thing I’ve learned it’s to follow your passion, not money. Even when not “working” I find myself creating projects everyday; anything to be creative and use my camera.  More on the” Adventurer” below.

How did I come to JOBY?

I’ve been a JOBY user and advocate for a few years. I originally found the JOBY brand online and won the JOBY X-Frame stop motion video contest. This landed me a Canon DSLR as the grand prize and I have forever been grateful. I was using a camera DSLR and Pro Video Camera everyday for work and began using the GorillaPod Focus and Ballhead X. I instantly fell in love with them and it would be no exaggeration for me to say they have since been a staple in my pro kit. A lot of my work requires I travel light and the GorillaPod Focus solved so many of my pro needs.

What is that and where can I get one? I was asked this repeated, almost daily while working with the GorrillaPod. Nobody ever asked me about any of my gear before but I soon found myself recommending and going on and on about JOBY products. I became a brand advocate because I was so grateful to have these awesome tools.

They Have Personality – I’ll admit in downtime I have pretended my GorrilaPods were the alien robots from War of the Worlds and they decimated everything on my desktop. Argg!

I Am An ADVENTURER

Life is the collection experiences and I don’t want to waste a minute. I’ve rode motorcycles since I was 3 and am a speed junkie. 185 is the fastest I’ve ridden; I need a faster bike. I’ve worked as a stunt performer rappelling and jumping of buildings. Skydiving, rock climbing, skiing, skateboarding. Those really just make me a adrenaline nut but when I stepped out onto the wing of a plane to film a motorcycle race something changed and not just the shocked look on the pilots face.

Last summer I stopped everything and set off on my motorcycle for 85 days, 11,980 miles through 27 states and on the way back conquered the Trans American Trail which is an off road trail from TN to OR. I lived out of a tent on my bike and had multiple adventures along the way. I also filmed the whole adventure using Gorillapods for a documentary Pursuit Horizion (in final production).

ZACH FACTS:

  • I consume 60lbs of chocolate a year. More than the average person in the top ten consumption countries combined. I have a serious chocolate addiction. You know when I’ve had too much when I can’t stop talking.
  • I’m 50% Thai (Thailand) and 50% French
  • I was a pageant child –  Winner Cutest Little Boy in Reno 1980 – I know you’re jealous 🙂
  • I’m engaged to the perfect woman for me. She’s beautiful, loves motorcycles & Moto-GP, and is an adventurer.

MY GEAR – What I use the most.

I can’t wait to work with the JOBY community and create pure awesomeness!

April JOBY Team Photo Contest

By | Contests, Office, Photography | One Comment

We’ve got quite the talented team here at JOBY and a few months ago I decided to test their skills with a monthly photography contest. Each month features a new theme, folks submit their best work, then we vote for our favorites. Now that spring has sprung here in San Francisco, I decided a Color theme was only proper. Here are our photos!

Farewell!

Hello Creactives!

The time has come for me to wish you adieu as today is my last day at JOBY. It has been a great ride and it has been fun getting to know you and being inspired by the amazing things that you do.

Never fear – I am leaving you in the capable hands of Emily (she is the one doing the snorkel) – who already made a guest appearance on the blog last week.

Cheers!

Eileen

JOBY Donates to Second Harvest Japan to support Japanese Relief Efforts

By | Office | No Comments

JOBY is proud to support the relief efforts currently underway in Japan following the tsunami and earthquake.  As our first and strongest international market, Japan has a special significance for the JOBY community.  For years, we have been inspired by the knowledgeable, passionate, adventure-seeking photography and outdoor enthusiasts of Japan and this has only increased after seeing their resilient response to recent events. Fortunately, our partners, family members and employees have been spared any direct effects. Not everyone has been as fortunate; in an effort to help support Japan as they rebuild their future, JOBY is contributing 1,000 GorillaTorches and $5,000 to Second Harvest Japan, the country’s first food bank which has been providing aid to the worst hit areas of Japan.

The GorillaTorches and contribution will help support the disaster relief efforts of Second Harvest Japan to deliver food and other much needed items to the affected areas of Japan following the earthquake and tsunami.  Second Harvest Japan’s mission is to provide food that would otherwise go to waste, orphanages, the elderly, emergency shelters, single mothers, the homeless, migrant workers, and many others. For more information, or to donate to Second Harvest Japan, visit www.2hj.org.

Patrick Trefz Idiosyncracies Screening at Joby Labs

By | Events, Friends of Joby, Joby Inspired, Office, Photography | No Comments

Last Thursday, Joby was thrilled to host the screening of Joby Pro Team member, Patrick Trefz’s new film Idiosyncrasies. As the latest unveiling of the Joby Inspired: Wall, we also were able to refresh our walls and have added some of his awesome and inspirational surf art to our office for the next few months.

In advance of the event we spent time cleaning up the space and sprucing it up to make it look just right for the intimate event. Heidi and I bonded as we hung pictures and struggled to get it just right (yes, it is harder when the floor is uneven).

And so the event begins….

Eric shoots fabulous shots… which unfortunately will never be seen due to a theft in our office:(. Boo to thieves.

Forrest introduces Patrick Trefz and his beautifully filmed work.

Patrick sets the tone…

…and the film begins!

Some seats are better than others.

FOJ (Friends of Joby) – Rewarded at International Contemporary Furniture Fair

By | delightful design, FOJ, Friends of Joby, Office | No Comments

Last month the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) which seeks to be a global summit of what’s best and next in design took place in New York City. Capping off the event of fabulous and innovative design was the ICFF Editors Award. This year the ICFF proclaimed panel of the “hippest and most in-the-know U.S. and international editors” included;  Arlene Hirst, Anniina Koivu of Abitare, Jessica Johnson of Azure, Stefano Casciani of Domus, Sam Grawe of Dwell, Gilda Bojardi of Interni, Chantal Hamaide of Intramuros, Susan S. Szenasy of Metropolis, Benjamin Kempton of Wallpaper*.

We were thrilled to see some of our closest friends in the design community take home top honors. It doesn’t hurt that two of them in particular have been integral to making our new office space so amazing. Last year, the brains and skill behind our great white table; Council Design, took home top prize for furniture design. This year, Joby friend and designer of the wonderful orange lights that illuminate our space, Peter Stathis won for the lighting category.

Congrats!

Highlights From Joby Lab Launch + Liquor and the Joby Inspired: Wall

Joby Open House April 22nd 2010

Recently, we celebrated our new office space with a lively and fun filled party aka Joby Lab Launch + Liquor. Over 200 people joined us to eat, drink, mingle and even dance a little. The drinks flowed liberally as we feted our lovely new setup designed by Philip Wood & CITIZEN: Citizen along with Derek Chen the rest of the Council design team who crafted the amazing white tables that you see in the pictures below.

In addition, we inaugurated the Joby Inspired: Wall –  a curated space which showcases creative work whose goal is to inspire and foster new ways of viewing. Philip Wood blessed us by setting the bar high with the showcasing of his new work titled The Pattern of Security series of objects derived and inspired by data protection envelopes. In Philip’s words:

The Pattern of Security, a collection of products and a book, together form what we see as a first draft, a response and an observation on our concerns (both real and imagined) with security in the contemporary age.

Our space was further enhanced with a collection of found photographs (visible on most of the walls) by Rich Hansen from Indicate Design Group. Thank you Rich!

We even created some fun pictures ourselves  with the help of an instant back resulting in a cool vintage feeling photographs.

Friday Finds: Joby Decorates, Gorillapod Magnetic, Gorillacam Gets High Marks – Again & Flickr Favorites

Hello Creactives!

How Many Joby Employees Does it Take to Move  a Bookcase?

Here at Joby we continue to move into our new space. Last week, we took on what seemed to be an easy task of moving a bookcase…apparently that was a little deceptive.

Gorillapod Magnetic Does the Rounds

Gorillapod magnetic flitted its way across the internet this week…ooh magnets! Of particular interest:

Engadget test drives the Gorillapod Magnetic on a golf club and discovers that hanging cameras in all directions is fun.

Gorillacam Soars to 1.5MM Downloads and Gets Top Reviews

As reported earlier this week Gorillacam, built by Apptight, Joby’s iPhone camera application reached a new high by reaching 1.5MM downloads. Finishing off a lovely week, Tempting Magazine selected the Gorillacam app as one of the Top 5 Best iPhone Apps.

Flickr Gorillapod Love Favorite Photo of the Week

This great image by Jez Page in the Gorillapod Love flickr pool caught my attention. I love the hint of the Ferris wheel behind the beautiful building, a little bit of modernity poking into the photograph.

By | creactive, Office, Photography | No Comments

Hello Fellow Creactives* (yep that’s you!),

Spring has arrived here in sunny San Francisco and it seems like the appropriate time to spring the blog back to life. At the risk of extending the metaphor too far, we also have lots of new stuff going on around here. We recently moved to a sparkling new office space (see photo below) and I am now here to keep you informed about all things Joby, interesting happenings and hopefully not too random musings.

So to give you a better sense of who I am, these are a few of my favorite things (trust me, you should be grateful, you can’t hear me sing).

A whole lot of books
