When did you start taking photos?
I started taking photos in 2006 when I was a college student studying abroad in Madrid, Spain.
Why did you start taking photos?
I bought a point and shoot camera before I started my college study abroad program in Spain. I knew it was a once in a lifetime experience so I wanted to capture everything I could during my short time there. I ended up taking a few thousand photos in 3 months and really liked how some of them came out.
When did you join Instagram and why did you join?
I joined Instagram about 2 years ago when I realized I was using social media primarily just to see photos people shared, not status updates or links.
What is your favorite image you’ve posted to Instagram and why?
This photo was taken in Rio de Janeiro last year. This photo contains a cityscape embedded in nature’s serene landscape, with the tram lines that give more depth to the photo.
What do you use the most, DSLR or Smartphone?
Before Instagram I had only been using DSLR. However once Instagram came out, the iPhone camera had made huge jumps in quality, and editing apps were first developed – I found it mobile photography much more fascinating and challenging. Since then I’ve found myself using my iPhone more often to see how far I can push the limits of mobile photography.
Are there any photo apps you recommend?
To shoot I primarily use the native iPhone camera with HDR or Camera+ which allows shooting with uncompressed TIFF files. For night photography I use AvgNiteCam, and for light trails I use SlowShutterApp. I usually start editing by adjusting exposure, contrast, brightness, and levels with apps like snapseed or filterstorm. Then I may add a filter or adjust temperature/tint with VSCOcam. Lastly I use a low amount of filter in Picfx for a unique effect.
Are you a professional photographer or hobbyist?
I used to shoot for my college when I was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, however since I graduated I just shoot for fun now.
Do you attend or have you attended photography workshops, classes etc?
What’s your day job?
I am a Dermatologist.
Do you carry a camera daily? Which one?
Yes. Either my iPhone 6+ or Canon 6D.
Which fellow instagrammer do you admire the most?
@cocu_liu is a fellow Chicago instagrammer who has a great eye for street and architecture photography.
Any advice to those staring out?
Don’t let the cost of camera gear stop you from getting into photography, all you need is your phone and a couple bucks to download an editing app. Then just go out and take as many photos as you can, while following other photographers that inspire you, and the rest will come naturally.
