How to Take Slow Shutter Photos of Water with Chris Burkard

By | How To | No Comments

Chris Burkard is a California-based travel and surf photographer. As a staff  photographer for Surfer Magazine, he spends a lot of time taking photos in and around the water. After just a few minutes of looking at Chris’ work, you can tell that his love for the ocean runs deep. Today, Chris shares one of his favorite ways to take photos of water. Be sure to follow him on Instagram to see some incredible shots from all over the world! Thanks for sharing Chris!

Exposing Water by Chris Burkard

Tripods can be cumbersome and tough to lug on trips.  Or they can be small and awesome like Joby.  I have attached my Joby tripods onto boats in Alaska, atop a military vehicle in Russia, at the base of the waterfalls in Iceland, and used in many places in between.  The tripod is great for run and gun shooting when you want to stay light and mobile. One of my favorite applications of the Joby tripods are around water when I am looking to shoot slow shutter speeds.

Shooting around water gives you a lot of creative options.  You can freeze the action of the water with a high shutter speed resulting in great detail making every water droplet sharp.  Aiming for the opposite, using a shutter speed 1/25 or lower, results in an image that has a milky blurred water trail. To me it’s a bit more dreamlike.  It’s also a great way to convey the movement involved in a setting like a waterfall.  I’d recommend placing the GorillaPod at a low angle to convey the magnitude of the waterfalls and landscape.  I’d also recommend shooting either early in the morning or around sunset for light that isn’t as harsh.  This image is taken about a half hour after sunset. I used a wide lens and an exposure of 6 seconds.  I also used a lamp to cast some interesting light on the subject.

You can apply this same technique to rivers and the ocean.  In this river shot, the long exposure showcases the flow of the water.  The river is true to its mood with the mossy rocks still as the water moves around them.  I shot this with a wide lens and an aperture of f13 to keep the background in focus as well.  This helps to showcase the entire scene rather than just the river.  The exposure was 2 seconds.

This image of the shoreline looking out across the ocean is shot at a lower angle, giving a dramatic sense of scale bringing you closer to the water.  With long exposures you often can shoot well after the sun goes down.  Often times water moving around objects will make for a more interesting image.  The exposure was 30 seconds.

2013, ICELAND, LAND ROVER, ERIC SODERQUIST, MIKEY DETEMPLE,

On all the shots I try to keep my ISO low, under 200 and adjust my exposure depending on the water movement.  Have fun trying your hand at photographing water in your area and on your travels.

How to Shoot Fireworks with Your Phone

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

With Independence Day upon us, I thought it only proper to give a quick tutorial about the how to best capture the fireworks displays that will be shooting up all over the USA. You don’t want to miss the shot because you’re fumbling with your iPhone or Galaxy SIV, right?

Fire at Night

So here we go …

1. Don’t forget a tripod!!! Bust out your iPhone or Android smartphone + GripTight phone tripod and position it appropriately to capture the action. Watch out for trees, buildings and other spectators who might block your shot.

2.  Turn off the flash!

3. If you have an iPhone, use out our iPhone camera app GorillaCamPro. If you have an Android, check out Lapse It.  Set yourself up for success, which means lots and lots of shots. Set up the apps to take photos at a 1, 5, 10 or 30 second intervals, sit back, enjoy the show and let your phone do all the work for you!

4. Use a self-timer  to avoid camera shake when you hit the shutter button.

5. Test out long exposures. An app like SlowShutter or Dr. Light will do the trick.

How to Transform your iPhoneography with *safesolvent

By | Friends of Joby, Gorillamobile, GripTight, iPhone, Photography | No Comments

We sent our new GripTight GorillaPod Magnetic smartphone tripod to a few of our favorite Instagrammers, asked them to give it a whirl and then share their photos and experience here on the blog. First up, JOBY Pro Martin Reisch. Martin has been shooting with a GorillaPod for years and his long distance self-portrait photos have become iconic on Instagram. We’re pretty sure he started an entirely new genre of self-portraiture, and boy are we glad he did!

What is your favorite thing about shooting with GripTight?

The GorillaPod essentially removes the “I have to be holding it” part of the photo equation and also adds this “ceilings and fences can be surfaces too” element. It opens up a lot of opportunity for uniqueness in my photography. Usually, I’m putting equal amounts of effort into finding interesting places to shoot and finding a place to put my GorillaPod. Often, I’ll see a potential spot that I can hang or grip my GorillaPod onto and THEN see what it gives through the camera.

What is your best tip for using GripTight?

My best tip for using the GorillaPod is that you only need to use two legs to grip, and then you can use the third one to provide stability for your phone by bending it into an angle and having it rest or push off the surface to counter-stabilize your phone.

What are your favorite apps for shooting? For editing?

I’m a huge fan of Camera+. It’s essentially the first thing I open when I’m shooting and also often the only app I use to edit. I have started to play with the Slow Shutter app for nighttime shooting and I’m very impressed by Photoforge 2 app for masking and heavy duty, complex edits. But for the most part, I like a clean image with a bit of contrast boost and a little cross process filter—both of which can be done in Camera+.

What is your best advice for folks who are new to self-portraiture?

I often pretend like nobody is around when I’m taking my self-portraits because I know how being self-consciousness affects the final shot. You can tell, even on a small iPhone screen, if someone is not in the moment. Pretend like nobody is looking and you’ll get better self-portrait shots.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by a combination of the music on my iPhone while I’m wandering around, and the light and architecture of a place. If I’m in a rush, I’ll usually be late because I can’t help but capture things like lens flare from the sun hitting a building and reflecting onto the ground. People have started to comment that “*safe solvent time” is 15-20 minutes behind reality.

JOBY Makes Camera Straps Kick Ass!

By | Gorillapod, New Product Launch, Photography | 3 Comments

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new line of JOBY Camera Straps for DSLRs and compact system cameras! It’s been a while since we’ve ventured into a completely new genre of camera accessories, and we’d forgotten how fun it is to let our JOBY design and engineering team loose on something rather dull (camera straps) and see how they make it totally bad ass. Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the UltraFit Sling Strap for Men, UltraFit Sling Strap for Women and 3-Way Camera Strap!

The camera strap you think of when you think “camera strap” is probably the one that came with your camera—some cheap combination of plastic bits and abrasive webbing that just sort of hangs there. We’re guessing this is how your feel about it …

JOBY Camera Straps are an entirely different product. Instead of some limp piece of cloth attached to your camera, our camera straps are exactly what you expect from JOBY— innovative, multi-purpose, high-quality, and fun to use. This video will give you an idea of what JOBY Camera Straps have to offer.

We started this project by thinking about what we would want from a camera strap—something as versatile, hard-working and up-for-adventure as we are. Our ideal strap would be comfortable for long days of shooting, make sure our camera is always at hand so we never miss a shot, and would keep our camera safe from the bumps and bangs of active life. With this at heart, we’ve created three revolutionary camera strap solutions—the UltraFit Sling Strap for MenUltraFit Sling Strap for Women and 3-Way Camera Strap.

UltraFit Sling Strap for Men

There are just moments between you and the perfect shot. But, a lot of the time you spend shooting isn’t with your camera at your face. It’s looking for the next shot, mingling with the crowd, eating a burrito. We designed the UltraFit Sling Strap with this photographer-lifestyle truth in mind. Our strap allows you to cinch your camera tight against your body to keep it safe and secure and your hands free, but quickly extends to shooting mode with a simple pull on your camera grip. Much better than just hanging around your neck, right?

For more reasons why the UltraFit Sling Strap for Men is awesome, jump on over to JOBY.com or watch the snazzy demo video.

UltraFit Sling Strap for Women

We noticed that there were hardly any camera straps on the market that were specifically designed for a woman’s body—something the ladies at JOBY just wouldn’t stand for. After talking with female photographers and some serious ergonomics research, we designed a strap that was not only optimized for your curves, but also preformed better than straps designed for men. With the UltraFit Sling Strap, you can wear your camera cinched tight against your body for comfort and camera security, and with one fluid movement, extend the strap to shooting mode. A camera that is always at hand, yet conveniently handsfree. Sweet!

For more reasons why the UltraFit Sling Strap for Women is fabulous, jump on over to JOBY.com or watch the snazzy demo video.

3-Way Camera Strap

Doing more with less is one of our favorite things here at JOBY. With this in mind, we designed the 3-Way Camera Strap. The 3-Way Camera Strap quickly transforms from a wrist strap to a full-length shoulder or neck strap with the push of a button. Thanks to an innovative retractor mechanism and hyper-strong Dyneema cord, the strap extends and retracts automatically! It is design magic that will totally impress your friends, in addition to being the most versatile camera strap out there.

Super strong Dyneema cord is a key part of the 3-Way Camera Strap. The Dyneema cord has 90 lbs tensile strength or, as we like to think, it will support the weight of four chubby corgis!

For more reasons why the 3-Way Camera Strap is rad, jump on over to JOBY.com or watch the snazzy demo video.

Let us know what you think about our new gear on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or in the comments. Plus, stay tuned for great giveaways!

April JOBY Team Photo Contest

By | Contests, Office, Photography | One Comment

We’ve got quite the talented team here at JOBY and a few months ago I decided to test their skills with a monthly photography contest. Each month features a new theme, folks submit their best work, then we vote for our favorites. Now that spring has sprung here in San Francisco, I decided a Color theme was only proper. Here are our photos!
