How to GorillaTorch Flare for Photo & Video Lighting at Night

By | Artist Profile, Gorillatorch, How To, Photography | 4 Comments

Oakland-based photographer/videographer/rock climber Austin Zimmerman used our GorillaTorch Flare 125 to light an awesome video of his recent trip to Yosemite. The great part about using a GorillaTorch on a camping trip? It also doubles as a photo and video light in case you decide to film your friends climbing at night!

High Adventure Weekend from Austin Z on Vimeo.

We caught up with Austin after his trip to hear what he thought of GorillaTorch Flare and also get some tips for how to use GorillaTorch Flare to light your nighttime photos and videos.

Tell us about your project.

This short film was shot with a Canon DSLR and a Joby GorillaTorch Flare 125 during a weekend trip to Yosemite. A few days before our trip, a member of the Joby crew brought a box of Joby torch lights to the climbing gym where I work. We hooked up a few lucky members at our gym with a Joby light, but a co-worker and I decided we had to take one with us to Yosemite for some “field testing”.

Tell us about your experience using the Joby GorillaTorch Flare 125.

I was blown away by the quality of light the Joby put out. The Flare 125 provided a crisp, clean beacon of light which really illuminated every detail of the boulder. Everything from the curvature of the rock all the way down to the obsidian crystals inside the granite. I have used external lighting to capture rock climbing footage at night before, but on this trip I decided to leave the bulky L.E.D. panel at home, with no regrets.

Tips for using the Joby as external lighting?

Much like uplighting or downlighting in home landscaping, having a powerful concentrated beam of light allows you to pick out the natural features you would like to highlight. The Joby is perfect for filming boulders at night because of the way it accentuates the beautifully sculpted prows and ledges. Those are the types of features that really lend themselves to the camera. The trick is not to point the light straight at the rock, but to pick an angle which highlights those features.

Favorite attribute of the Flare 125?

This light is efficient to the max. After three long nights of climbing and gathering footage, the batteries hardly seemed fazed. Even the batteries in our headlamps, which produce less light, had to be swapped at least once each.

Best part about filming rock climbing?

A boulder problem is like an intricate and delicate puzzle. I really enjoy that moment of discovery when you unlock the sequence of movement that allows you to ascend a line edges in a rock face. I gain a lot of inspiration from that moment when you see someone transcend mental barriers. For me it is really motivating to watch a film that captures those moments.

If there is one thing that JOBY couldn’t be more thankful for it is our amazing customers. We really lucked out! Maxwell, our distribution partner in Australia, is a long-time supporter of JOBY and a very creative one at that!  We really appreciate all of the fabulous things that they’ve done to promote our GorillaPod and GorillaTorch lines. For example …

… this fun image shot using both a GorillaPod and a GorillaTorch.  A GorillaPod Focus supported the camera and a GorillaTorch Flare was used write the text. I say that is doubly awesome!

And even more impressive is this super-sized model of the GorillaPod Original that they built from molded Styrofoam! Originally used to promote JOBY tripods at a tradeshow, the Godzilla of GorillaPods now lives on the main sales floor of Australia’s largest independent camera store, Michaels of Melbourne. How cool is that?!?

Thanks Maxwell! You rock! Now if you could just make another 8 foot GorillaPod for us to display at the SF Office …

Friday Finds:IDEA Finalist, the Mentalist, Kartell and JOBY does a tour of Europe

By | Awards, Frame X Frame, Friday Find, Gorillamobile, Gorillapod, Gorillatorch, JOBY|Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration | No Comments

Sweet! It is Friday!

JOBY products popped up everywhere this week from prime time TV to high end design catalogs, with a slight layover in some European capitals.

Awesome news – GorillaMobile Ori was selected as a finalist  for the 2011 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) by ISDA!

iPads as the next generation of surveillance technology, may not be the most catching or realistic thing to ever appear on a TV show, but if you are going to do it – do it right. We were tickled pink to see GorillaMobile Yogi’s for iPad crawling around the control center in the season finale of the Mentalist last week.

Going a little more high brow? If you happen to get the Kartell catalog at home. You may see some surprisingly familiar imagery on products. We were psyched to see our office and products featured…sure they really cared about the bookcase, but that’s just gravy.

GorillaPods reintroduced themselves to the German market this week thanks to our new partner – HAMA Germany.

And then, the JOBY products were off to France to hang out with blogging and photography fun of Fanny’s Party – a hip press event held in Paris. There the team showed off the full product line with a special emphasis on GorillaMobile for iPhone 4 and Frame X Frame. It’s ironic that this picture could really use a tripod…

To round a very active week – GorillaTorch was featured in the Redbook and the JOBY|Peter Stathis Venture Collaboration had a great feature in the Huffington Post.

And now, it is time for the weekend!

Friday Finds: Sweet videos of people in motion air + water and some great reviews

By | Gorillapod, Gorillatorch, Photography, Press | No Comments

Happy Friday!!

Here at JOBY, we clearly are in awe of parkour (in case you haven’t figured that out see exhibit #1 = our website) and these outtakes from the Red Bull Art of the Motion shot using a GorillaPod do not diminish our interest one bit. Some mind blowing stuff!

Other Good Stuff

Look quickly and keep your eye on the woman’s hand (seriously)…you’ll know what I am talking about when you view this promotional video by Go Pro. Didn’t see what I was talking about? Where is your mind?

Some Press Shout Outs

“Innovative” and “useful”- music to our ears in this great piece about the GorillaTorch line that appeared in this week’s Montreal Gazette.

With “four viewing positions with infinite permutations” and affirmation of the ergonomic benefits of the foldable accessory, Macworld has a long review of our GorillaMobile Ori for iPad.

Friday Finds: Trams in Hong Kong and GorillaTorch Flare in Parents Magazine

By | Friday Find, Gorillatorch, Press, time-lapse photography | No Comments

Happy Friday!

This week a deluge  hit San Francisco, inspiring some members of the office to come to work in head to toe rain gear. While not winning any fashion awards, it probably did make for a more comfortable day at the office.

This magical video caught using a Lumix camera on a GorillaPod makes me, a lover of densely populated cities, want to get on a plane. I particularly enjoy the rhythm that occurs due to the trams starting and stopping.

GorillaTorch Flare was highlighted in Parents Magazine this month. It does look quite fetching against a turquoise backdrop.
